Alberta’s Opposition is criticizing the UCP government’s expansion of private-pay access to diagnostic services, warning it could create a two-tier health-care system.
NDP health critic Sharif Haji says the changes will allow those who can afford to pay to access faster care while leaving others with longer wait times. The criticism follows new regulations allowing certain preventative health testing services to be offered as non-insured options.
Health advocates, including Friends of Medicare, say such moves could pull resources from the public system and undermine access to publicly funded care.
