Taber has been named one of two finalists for the 2026 Kraft Hockeyville competition.
The announcement comes three months after an explosion at the Taber Community Centre forced the arena to shut its doors.
In the official submission for the Taber arena, the town is described as having a deep-rooted passion for hockey that has left a mark on the community. According to the submission, the arena is more than a place to play; it is a central gathering space. The arena is home to a range of programs and events, including minor hockey and teams such as the Oil Kings and the AA Golden Suns.
“From packed league games to tournaments and community events, the arena creates shared experiences that unite families and strengthen community bonds,” the submission read.
Other submissions focused on the connection community members have with the facility, including a longtime staff member who described working at the arena for more than a decade. They called it a source of pride and purpose, saying maintaining the ice and caring for the decades-old building is both a challenge and a reward that has allowed them to support their family while contributing to something meaningful.
“It is more than just a place of work.”
“Being part of a place that brings people together makes the work meaningful.”
The community also pointed to the impact of the Dec. 17 explosion and what a Hockeyville win would mean for recovery. The submission called the loss “devastating” and emphasized the arena is far more than a building, describing it as a space where friendships are formed, families gather and community identity is built.
According to the town the $250,000 prize would go toward repairing damage and restoring a space many rely on for programs, events and a sense of normalcy.
“Rebuilding the arena means bringing back local programs, events and a sense of normalcy for people of all ages,” the town wrote. “With support, we can rebuild something essential to our community.”
Those stories quickly spread beyond Taber, resonating across Alberta and the rest of the country, where many communities share similar ties to their local rinks.
Residents began rallying around the goal of earning the Hockeyville title within hours of the explosion, prompting a surge of community storytelling from within Taber and beyond.
Taber, alongside Tumbler Ridge, B.C., has been named one of the final two communities in the running for $250,000 in arena upgrades and the opportunity to host a National Hockey League pre-season game.
Town of Taber officials extended congratulations to Tumbler Ridge. The final decision will be determined by an online national vote taking place from 7 a.m. Friday, April 3, to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 4. The winner will be announced after voting closes.
