The provincial government is launching a new two-year, two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar pilot grant program that is aimed at addressing livestock vet shortages by having rural veterinary clinics hire students.
According to the government of Alberta, eligible clinics can receive up to ten thousand dollars to hire a veterinary student for summer placements between May and August.
Agriculture Minister RJ Sigurdson says the program will strengthen Alberta’s veterinary workforce and support livestock producers. According to post secondary educators the hands-on experience in rural clinics helps students build long-term connections and a sustainable workforce.
The program is funded through the federal-provincial Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, part of a three point five-billion-dollar infusion to support Canada’s agriculture sector.
