The Alberta government is putting $18 million into safety upgrades along Highway 28 between Smoky Lake and Cold Lake, with major improvements planned for the stretch through the County of St. Paul.
A transportation manager told St. Paul council the work comes from a 2018 study, recommending new passing lanes, better intersections, and safer curves.
Three new rest areas are also in the works near Ashmont and Highway 866, though council raised concerns about one being too close to a subdivision access with poor sight lines.
Officials say surveys are done, but land purchases and utility moves are needed before construction starts.
Other Highway 28 upgrades include paving projects near Warspite and new climbing lanes and twinning closer to Bonnyville and Cold Lake.
