Vegreville Votes: Candidate for Councillor Margaret Michaelchuk

Why are you running for council?

As a retired small-business owner with more than 25 years in the education system, I bring both experience and deep community roots to the table. My parents, children, and grandchildren all live, work and go to school here. I know first-hand the hopes and challenges our families share within the community.

My hope, if elected, is to plan for Vegreville’s growth while still maintaining the integrity of what makes Vegreville unique. My priorities are sustainability for young families, thoughtful growth, infrastructure, and balancing small and big business support. In recent years, we have seen far too many small businesses struggle and close. As a retired business owner myself, I believe Town Council must stand firmly behind our local entrepreneurs, ensuring their voices are heard and their contributions are valued.

My goal is simple: to be a transparent and reliable link between our citizens, the decision-making process, and other elected officials, helping Vegreville grow as a place where everyone feels included, supported, and economically sustained.

If elected what is one thing I wish to accomplish?

I understand that many residents feel taxation in Vegreville is too high. My goal is that with fair assessments and smarter budgeting, we can bring mill rates down in 2026 and beyond.

As a long-time small business owner, I know that when things break, they need to be replaced, but that doesn’t always mean buying brand new or doing everything at once. When you are working with your own money, you quickly learn that priorities need to be set, and sometimes a staggered approach is the most fiscally responsible way to manage costs.

That is the mindset I would bring to Town Council: balancing the need to maintain and improve infrastructure with the discipline of smart, phased spending, ensuring that taxpayer dollars are respected while still meeting the needs of our community.

My goal is to be a transparent and reliable link between citizens and decision-makers. I will publish clear updates, so every voice is heard and every concern answered.

The road ahead will have challenges, but together we can build a Vegreville that honors our history while embracing tomorrow’s opportunities. Let’s create a future we’re proud to leave to our children and grandchildren and that supports the seniors that built our Town.
