1998 … Glen Murray wins the municipal election in Winnipeg. He becomes the first openly gay mayor of a major North American city. Glen Murray will serve as mayor of Winnipeg until 2004. In January 2010, he will be elected to represent Toronto Centre in the Ontario legislature. He will hold several cabinet portfolios before retiring from political life in 2017.

 

1965 … The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, designed by Finnish-born American architect Eero Saarinen to commemorate St. Louis’s historic role as “Gateway to the West,” was completed.

 

 

1886 … U.S. President Grover Cleveland officially dedicated the Statue of Liberty—a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States—on Bedloe’s (later Liberty) Island in Upper New York Bay.
