Alberta will put more than $1 billion toward student financial support for upcoming academic year

Alberta is putting more than $1 billion toward student financial support for the upcoming academic year.

Applications for loans and grants opened June 3, with the province boosting non-repayable aid — including over $75 million in grants and nearly $107 million in scholarships and awards.

However, Alberta is changing how financial need is assessed, now factoring in parental or spousal contributions in some cases.

Advanced Education Minister Myles McDougall says the updates aim to better reflect a student’s true financial situation and ensure support goes to those who need it most.

Students are encouraged to apply early through the Alberta Student Aid portal.
