Elk Island Public Eastern Schools will once again be hosting an Indigenous Community Evening on May 5th from 5 to 7pm at Vegreville Composite High School.
The event is a conjoined effort put together by A.L Horton Elementary, VCHS, and the Mundare School, and will include a smudging ceremony, dinner with Indigenous themed foods, Indigenous dancers, and teachings with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit EIPS consultants.
Grade 4 and FNMI Lead Teacher for A.L. Horton Elementary School Morgana Larsen says that the event and teachings coincide directly with the goals of Elk Island Public Schools in its support of FNMI students and engaging in and teaching about Truth and Reconciliation.
She goes on to say that she hopes the experience of the evening will have a lasting impact on those who attend.
“We’re hoping that the public can come in and learn a little bit more about Indigenous ways of being, the teachings, the culture, and come away with a more well rounded idea of who Indigenous people are, and even maybe bring some of those teachings into their own lives.”
Indigenous Community Evening is open to everyone and is free to attend.
