A Conservative MP from Alberta has crossed the floor to join the Liberal party. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced earlier today (Wednesday) that Edmonton Riverbend MP Matt Jeneroux will sit with the Liberal caucus and serve as special adviser on economic and security partnerships.
Carney praised the work Jeneroux has done over the past decade in Ottawa, including serving in roles such as shadow minister for supply chains, innovation, and infrastructure.
In his own statement, Jeneroux, who originally had announced he was resigning from parliament back in November, says discussions he had with his family and talks with constituents led him to remain in Parliament and continue his work on the economy, national security and cost of living.
Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre condemned the move, calling it a betrayal of Edmonton voters. In his response, Poilievre says that the prime minister is trying to seize a majority government through “dirty backroom deals.” Jeneroux is the third Conservative MP to cross the floor to the Liberals since the last federal election.
