Treaty 8 First Nation Chiefs attended meeting on proposed pipeline project last week

Treaty 8 First Nation Chiefs say that a meeting held last week with provincial officials on the proposed Northwest Coast oil pipeline was exploratory in nature and does not signal support for the project.

In a statement, Treaty 8 leaders said their participation does not equal consent or fulfill the Alberta governments duty for consultation on the project. The statement continues, saying pipeline talks must recognize Treaty 8 rights from the start and follow a nation-to-nation process.

The chiefs say they are open to further discussions, but only if they are rights-based and respect their historic lands.
