Viking RCMP warning residents about a new phone scam

The Viking RCMP are warning residents about potential phone scams involving scammers posing as cell phone carrier representatives.

The scammers may persuade the victim to purchase promotional offers and provide personal details to their account, such as passwords, security codes, and other information.

Scammers can then log in to the victim’s legitimate cell phone account, where they order a new cell phone to be shipped out to the victim, only to later say there is a problem with the phone, and it must be shipped back. The victim would then ship the phone to an address provided by the scammer, never receive a replacement, and then are left with the bill from the cell phone provider.

The RCMP are reminding everyone to be aware, ask plenty of questions, and consider calling the cell phone provider back.

They say if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
